ジョセフ・ジェイコブスも「ノックグラフトンの伝説」を1894年のケルト話集続編に収めており、巻末注で「瘤取り」との類似を指摘している。ジェイコブスはまた（1891年の会合で）、この東西の民話の近似性を説話の世界的分布の模範例としてとりあげ、アイルランド語で語り継がれた民話の収集の必要性を訴えている<ref>Jacobs, 1894, p231</ref><ref name=dorson/>。
== 私的考察 ==
対立する（あるいは生き方が相反する）二人の男性が、一人は禍福を受け、一人は強欲などに対する罰を受ける、という対比的な物語の家、「瘤取り」に関するものが「ノックグラフトンの伝説」や「[[こぶとりじいさん]]」であるように思う。良くも悪くも超自然的な存在からの「贈り物」ということで、ATU503の話型「こびとたちの贈り物」という分類がされているのであろう。
物語によっては、超自然的な存在から得るものは、「こぶ」に限らず財産などがあるように思う。本物語群の主題は、
* 対照的な二人の（主に）男性の対比
* 超自然的な存在（いわば神霊）の恩寵を得たものが成功を得る
という２点であると思う。一般的には、「神の恩寵」を得るものは、客観的、慣例的に見て「良い行いをしている者」とされる。
物語の起源は、いわゆる[[炎黄闘争]]であり、神（[[西王母]]でもあり[[九玄天女]]でもあるもの）の恩寵を得た者が勝利する、という話ではなかろうか。
