ヴァハグンという名称は、アヴェスターに登場するインド・イランの勝利の神の名前である[[ウルスラグナ]]や、雷神インドラの通常の諡号であるヴェーダのウルトラハン（Vŗtrahan）と同義語である<ref>Petrosyan, 2007, p6</ref>。アルメニア語はパルティア語の*Varhraγnから借用され、それ以前の形*Varhagnから発展したものである<ref>Ivanov, 2011, p8</ref>。アルメニアの旧暦では、月の27日はヴァハグンと呼ばれていた<ref>Katvalyan, 1985</ref>。

The [[theonym]] Vahagn is cognates with [[Verethragna]], the name of the Indo-Iranian god of victory mentioned in [[Avesta]], as well as the [[Vedic Sanskrit|Vedic]] ''Vŗtrahan'', the usual epithet of the thunder god [[Indra]]. It was borrowed into Armenian from [[Parthian language|Parthian]] ''*Varhraγn'' and developed from the earlier form ''*Varhagn''. In the old [[Armenian calendar]], the twenty-seventh day of the month was called Vahagn.{{Sfn|Katvalyan|1985}} Additionally, the planet [[Mars]] was called ''Atraher'' ("fire-hair") by the ancient Armenians in reference to Vahagn.{{Sfn|Katvalyan|1985}} Today, Vahagn is used as a male given name among Armenians.
