ウルリクヌミの物語は、天候神テシュブにとって代わり、クミヤの都市を破壊しようとしたクマルビ神に関連する「歌」の叙事詩の中で最も保存状態がよく、最も完全な1エピソードである<ref>Guterbock (1951) p&nbsp;135.</ref>。この目的のためにクマルビは岩の絶壁に性別がなく、聴覚と盲覚を持ち、かつ感覚を持つ火山岩の怪物ウリクムミを産み、冥界に隠し、ウペルリの肩に乗せておいたとされる。瞑想にふけっていたウペルリは、ウルリクヌミが肩にのっているのを感じなかった<ref>ウペルリは冥界に立ち、ギリシアのアトラスのように'''大地と空を肩に乗せている'''。ウルリクムミのような単なる巨人はほとんど目立たないが、ウルリクムミが成長するとウペルリの肩に少し痛みを感じるようになる。</ref>。

Ullikummi grew quickly until he reached the heavens. Ullikummi's brother [[Teshub]] thundered and rained on Ullikummi, but it did not harm him. Teshub fled and abdicated the throne.<ref group=lower-alpha>The weather god and his vizier and brother, Tasmisu, are defeated in their first battle with Ullikummi, as Tasmisu relates to Teshub's wife, Hebat; as a result Teshub is banished to a "little place," probably meaning a grave.</ref> Teshub asked [[Ea (Babylonian god)|Ea]] for help.<ref group=lower-alpha>Ea, who lives in the Apsu, underground source of earth's waters, obtains the toothed cutting tool with which heaven and earth were cut apart shortly after creation; this tool will disable Ullikummi.</ref> Ea visited Upelluri and cut off the feet of Ullikummi, toppling him <ref group=lower-alpha>That is, Ea cuts Ullikummi loose from Upelluri's shoulder and then urges the weather god to fight again; the end of the story is broken away and scholars simply assume Ullikummi is finally defeated.</ref><ref>Haas, Volkert (2006) pp&nbsp;130-176.</ref>
